Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue was established in 1955 and is one of trhe fastest growing and most vibrant Jewish communities in the UK.We are one of the largest United Synagogue communities, with more than 1,200 families. Every Shabbat, hundreds of members attend services, with at least 100 children and youth attending specific services each Shabbat and Yomtov.
Jewish living is at the heart of our Synagogue life, and is reflected in the array of activities that take place throughout the community on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.
With thousands of children and youth gracing our ever-expanding community, Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue aims to provide activities for all, both of a religious and non-religious kind.
We run learning sessions including a Tanach course, Parent and Children Learning, Seed, regular Shiurim, Lunch and Learn as well as having regular speakers visit the shul. We have Babies and Bagels, organised trips abroad and youth, children and uniform groups meeting every week at the shul as well as many other organised activities.
The main Shabbat service is the hub of our community but we also have other services. There is an alternative ‘Limmud Minyan’ each Shabbat morning which commences at 9.30am. This service is much smaller and intimate than the main service and involves discussion and more of a ‘learning and educational’ style of service.Additionally, every fortnight, there is a Hashkama minyan. This is a small, intimate service, which is particularly good for families with young (pre-walking) children, enabling husbands to go home in time for their wives to attend the regular services. Running in tandem with these services is a weekly Youth Service tailor made for secondary school children and we also have a full range of childrens’ services from pre-nursery through to the end of primary school.
