LSJS: London Olympics 2012 – Three Jews Compete-2!

Who Really Won at Chanukah?

Clive Lawton

8:00 to 9:30pm on  Wednesday 27 June 2013

While we make great play of having defeated Hellenism, the country is going soggy crazy with Olympic mania. So what kind of a victory was it? Did we just reserve the right to treat sport with a certain disdain? History is Greek as is most of science and philosophy. In the face of such utter cultural power, what is it we Jews have to say in return? And, are the London Olympics the time to say it?

Clive Lawton teaches Jewish Education and Community Studies at LSJS and is a scholarin-residence at the LJCC. He received the Jewish Agency’s Max Fisher Prize for Diaspora Jewish Education in Jerusalem in 2007.
