Sha’arei Tsedek is a friendly and welcoming Reform community in North London. Many social as well as religous activities for all ages.
The Place
Sha’arei Tsedek is housed in a beautiful spacious building which feels very much like home. The Synagogue is a unique and peaceful space that promotes both a sense of community and peace.
Sha’arei Tsedek began life in a house in Winchmore Hill in 1961. The congregation grew rapidly and twenty years later we purchased a warehouse in Southgate High Street. Very quickly the rather decrepit building was transformed by home-grown skill and labour, creating a lively and warm Jewish environment.
‘High Street’ was Sha’arei Tsedek’s (at that time – SDRS’) home for eighteen years, then in 1999 we moved to our present abode in Whetstone, a spacious building which has given us the room to provide a range of activities and services. What had been a gym became a beautiful prayer hall. A wide variety of groups use the facilities regularly and we are proud that the synagogue has become a Jewish community centre.
The People
Sha’arei Tsedek has a flourishing kindergarten, Alonim, which has a well founded reputation for excellence in the area – and a waiting list to match!
There are three family activities each month bringing in many young children.
We boast a high quality Religion School, with qualified Jewish educators working with the young of the community, many of whom go on, after bnei mitzvah, to take on teaching roles themselves.
Our Circus Youth Club provides activities and informal Jewish education for the younger members of the community.
We have groups providing for a variety of specific needs in the community and there is a thriving social scene. We organise trips to European cities with Jewish connections and our post bnei-mitzvah youngsters spend a specially structured weekend in Amsterdam.
Our religious life is full, rich and all-inclusive. Having a rabbinic team allows us to provide not just one form of service, but to offer a variety of styles of prayer to involve all age groups. We have a flourishing junior warden scheme, in which teenagers are ‘apprenticed’ to experienced wardens and we have a thriving choir.
