Maccabi GB Inspiring the Jewish Community

Maccabi GB has become the first charity in the Jewish community to be granted the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme, for their Sports Tournaments and Clubs.

The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Maccabi GB School Sports Programme engages over 1,000 young people a week in a broad range of sports programmes and after-school clubs within Primary and Secondary Schools, bringing young Jewish people together and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The programme also delivers over thirty sports tournaments a year and in 2010 these tournaments engaged more than 3,000 young people. These tournaments provide the only occasion when the Jewish schools join together to engage in sport.

Like many outstanding Inspire projects that are taking place now in our region and across the UK, Maccabi GB’s Sports Tournaments and Clubs aim to reflect the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect and Paralympic values of determination, courage, inspiration and equality to promote the diversity of our region, in the run up to the London 2012 Games and beyond.

Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help us achieve this vision now, 18 months out from the start of the Games. I congratulate everyone involved in the Maccabi GB Sports Tournaments and Clubs  for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”

Martin Berliner, Chief Executive Officer of Maccabi GB said: “It is encouraging to see that Maccabi GB can play a part in such an important national event as the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. Sport plays such an important role in the lives of young people and we are proud to be engaging such a large proportion of young people in our community on a weekly basis through the Schools Sports Programme. It is an honour to be a part of the Inspire programme and to be connected with the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Chair of The Jewish Committee for the London Games (JCLG) Adrian Cohen said: “The JCLG congratulates our partner Maccabi GB on being awarded the Inspire Mark. The JCLG is currently planning various programmes that will enable us to use culture, education and sport to engage the UK Jewish Community with the London Olympics. This award to Maccabi GB shows that the Jewish Community has a positive role to play in the Games. JCLG member organisations which include Maccabi GB are looking forward to inspiring our community to participate as fully as possible in the excitement and spirit of the Olympics.”
